The annual Tinto Twin competition took place over the weekend 31 October and 01 November 2009. The night event courses twisted around lovely runnable sections of Beecraigs. It was a very enjoyable night run, followed by equally enjoyable hot soup and good banter in the visitor centre. Top Interloper performances came from Fiona Weir 1st W21S, Ann Haley 1st W45L and Ken Daly 2nd M45L.
On Sunday, the day event concentrated on the new area, Witch Craig Wood. This was tougher physically, but fun. The only dampener was the rain. However, most Interlopers quickly retreated to the Weir / Owen house for cups of tea, hot soup, bread, cake, etc (thanks to Fiona and Barry). Very convivial!
At the day event ‘team Galloway’ shone with Chris 1st Lt Green (Mark Haley 5th), Matt 2nd Orange, Samuel 3rd Yellow (closely followed by Freddie Carcas and Max Bloor) and Robin 5th Brown. Other notable Interloper performances included Dave Godfree 2nd Black, Rob Bloor 5th and Graham McIntyre 8th Short Brown, Mary Ross 10th Blue (where were the boys?), Ann Haley 3rd and Jane Ackland 4th Short Blue, Patricia Alston 4th Short Green. Well done Ann Haley on becoming Tinto Twin W45L Champion.

Interloper’s Scott Fraser, Murray Strain, Alan Cherry and Lorna Eades all ran superbly this weekend, to help the 18 person Scotland team to victory in the Senior Home Internationals. The individual and relay events, in Northern Ireland, were both held on tricky limestone terrain, but our quartet, along with the rest of the Scotland team, controlled their speed and navigation to win both days and the overall trophy. The victory was also well earned by Scotland team manager, Andy Kitchen (Interlopers), who has worked hard to develop the Scottish Elite Development Squad and prepare for them for this event.
Following on from his Scottish Sprint Championship title on the Saturday, Murray Strain romped to victory at Anagach Woods the next day (27/09/09). Murray finished the 7.8 kilometre brown course, through undulating heather and bilberries, in a very impressive 46:59 minutes. Although a quality field assembled for this race, Murray finished 2:32 minutes ahead of his closest rival. An outstanding performance!
Saturday 26/09/09 was a good day for Murray Strain and Interlopers, as he raced to victory at the Scottish Sprint Championships in Lossiemouth town centre. The terrain was a combination of complex streets and alleyways, followed by a section of fast parkland. With 24 controls in 3.4 kilometres there was plenty of scope for error. Fast thinking and clean lines were the order of the day. Murray finished in 17:36 minutes to take victory by a mere 18 seconds. The Scottish title will be a welcome relief for Murray, who earlier in the year missed out on the JK Sprint tile when he fell and dislocated his shoulder.
There was a good Interlopers turn out for SOL 4 on Sunday and plenty of excellent results. The event, held at Dalnamein, Blair Atholl, was a tough physical challenge through rough forest and open hillside. Despite the underfoot conditions everyone appeared to enjoy the day out. The top Interloper results were Max Bloor (7th Yellow), Mathew Galloway (1st Orange), Chris Galloway (4th Lt Green), Patricia Alston (2nd Short Green), Ben Hartman (3rd Brown), Scott Fraser (2nd Black), Matt Speake (3rd Black) and Alan Cherry (7th Black).
Interlopers kicked the autumn season off with third place in the 11 Person Relay at Faskally on Saturday. This was an excellent result and the top position of the clubs that tried to enter into the spirit of the event by fielding juniors on the orange courses. Admittedly, our third junior (Donald Reay) was a little bit older than Chris and Mathew Galloway, but that did not distort the results.
The race was also our first opportunity to field Interlopers latest super star signing, Matt Speake. Matt, along with Scott Fraser, had recently returned from GB international duty at the World Championships in Hungary. Both Matt and Scott cruised to victory in their respective 11 Person Relay classes.
The Interlopers second team also performed well with Mairi Eades and James Ackland posting superb results for juniors so young.

Braidburn Park (Comiston Springs Avenue entrance). NT242695
Starts from 14:00 -> 15:00 as usual.
£3.00 seniors; £1.00 juniors
There'll be yellow and orange courses for beginners and juniors; for adults and people wanting more of a challenge, there'll be (probably) a loop-race (or something). Help available for beginners.
Braidburn Valley Park is a well cared for urban park in south Edinburgh, with a good path network and hence a good venue for a beginners orienteering event. The Braid Burn, which flow through the middle of the park, is crossable at four bridges. The park itself is well bounded by walls and fences and is delightful ....
Interlopers Dave Godfree, Mary Ross and the W45 relay team (Helen Murray, Jane Ackland and Lorna Eades) were all victorious in the JK International Orienteering Festival over the Easter weekend. Scott Fraser, Donald McIntyre, Alan Cherry, Keith Dawson and Jane Haley also climbed the podium on one or more days. I counted 23 top 10 positions for Interlopers in the sprint, combined individual and relay competitions. Well done everyone!
Full results are available on the JK and Sportident web sites:
http://www.jk2009.org.uk/results.php http://www.sportident.co.uk/results/2009/JK/Unfortunately Interloper Murray Strain fell heavily in the sprint competition and suffered a dislocated shoulder. We wish Murray a speedy recovery. The loss of Murray and a number of other relay drop outs created a difficult challenge for club captain Anthony Squire: Lift runners up the classes and potentially weaken all of the teams affected or drop the JK Trophy team altogether? In the end several runners stepped up a class, other teams were shuffled and the M120+ team was dropped. The resultant Interloper teams all performed admirably. Thanks Anthony!
The JK is always a fun event, with major competition in all classes and a great opportunity to catch up with friends from far away. This year the event was further enhanced by continuous sunshine which made most problems tolerable. However, there were major bus queue problems to and from the car park and relay competition area (I spent 3 hours in bus queues): If it had been cold, windy and wet the relay day would probably have been a disaster, with people abandoning the event and leaving teams incomplete. Hopefully lessons will be learnt for future major events.
Ken.

Traditional skittle alley at the back of the Sheep Heid Inn
The alley is separate from the main pub so children are allowed. Skittles are probably a little heavy for the under 5’s however. Bar food is available (super baskets) or if enough people are interested then we could book some buffet platters (would need to order by 02 March).
Please let Lorna know if you think you might come along, or just come along on the night anyway.

Please email ron.nolan@btopenworld.com to let him know you are coming so that we can prepare sufficient maps. Very young juniors are welcome, but it may be better if these are accompanied by an adult.
The Halloween party is being held this year in KB House (Kings Buildings, Entrance 2 West Mains Road, EH93JJ).
6-9pm (but bar open until~11pm I think)
We have a large room upstairs where we can eat and play games. We have also access to the bar down stairs where you can buy drinks to take up stairs or drink in peace downstairs, so hopefully we can cater for families and also those wishing a quieter social over a few drinks.
Graeme is going to put on a Spook o based at the kids and is also prepared to put out a street o for the grown ups if people reply to say they want this. We also have access to the showers so people can also go for a run from KB.
There will be a small charge towards the food ~£2-4, the club is adding in a little towards the costs.
Hope to see lots of you there,
Lorna
The Jamie Stevenson competition was held on St Magdalene Hill, a new area
to the west of Perth, on Sunday 14th September. Fifteen of Interlopers
Juniors took on the challenge, resulting in the club achieving its highest
ever position: 6th (although we were told 5th equal on the day!). The sun
shone, and the thermals came off. The team paraded with the Interloper
banner before setting off to the start. The rough semi-open woodland was
tough to get through, and the miriad of paths were a little confusing. The
results are calculated by awarding 100 points to the winner of each class,
99 for second and so on. The top 6 scorers for each club are added
together. Our top six scorers were:
2nd Alan Cherry (green)
4th James Ackland (yellow)
5th Max Ledlie (orange)
6th Lyndsey Cackette (orange)
8th Mark Haley (light green)
12th Stephen Haley (green)/Stuart Watson (l green)/Matthew Galloway (orange)
...and well done to all of the others who took part. We had the
brightest team out there. The weather remained fine and the BBQ was
very enjoyable. I hope all the parents enjoyed their leisurely day out! Ann
Around 50 children including Lyndsey Cackette, Euan Geddes, Mark Haley and Cameron Winterburn (all Firrhill) and Christopher Galloway (Boroughmuir) competed in the World Schools selection race at Beecraigs, Linlithgow on 12 September 2008. The children compete in 2 year age groups: 1992/3 and 1994/5 divided into girls and boys. This proved to be a challenging race and was a fantastic experience for everyone. It was Biggar High school who won the junior boys school team race. However, there were great individual performances by Mark Haley (2nd) and Christopher Galloway (6th) who will offered the opportunity to compete in the World School Orienteering Championships in Madrid in April 2009.
SOA's monthly newsletter for September 2008 ...
The sun shone and the Interlopers turned out in force. Fiona and Kirsty (only p4) Sutherland flew around the p5/6 girls course. Matthew and Samuel Galloway matched this by coming 1st and 4th in the p5/6 boys race. With a friend they took home the team prize for Buckstone. One of the Buckstone beginners won the p7 boys race and the p7 team took third position.
In the secondary races, Mark Haley (Firrhill) came 1st in the S1 boys race, followed by Christopher Galloway (Boroughmmuir) coming 2nd. The Firrhill team of Mark Haley, Cameron Winterburn and Euan Geddes, plus 2 more friends, brought home the S1 boys team trophy. One of the Firrhill girls took third place in the S1 race and the girls team put in an outstanding performance to come 2nd. Congratulations must also go to Stephen Haley for coming 3rd in the S5/6 race and to the S5 Firrhill team of Iain Cackette, Stephen Haley, Shaun Rogerson and Stuart Watson who won the Scottish Schools Orienteering Championships for the 4th consecutive year (see photo).
Congratulation to Iain Cackette, Stephen Haley, Shaun Rogerson and Stuart Watson for being selected to run for Scotland in the World Schools Orienteering Championships that were based in Edinburgh. 12 Scottish Schools were represented in this competition which had 485 competitors from 22 different countries.
The 'classic' event took place in Devilla, Kincardine. It was long and tough technically and underfoot, with wet conditions hindering progress. All of the members of the Firrhill team did well to complete their 6.3km course. This was followed by a 'middle distance' race at Barr Wood, Stirling. Times were fast, and the results were dominated by the Swedes and the Latvians. The final race was a friendship team event in Holyrood Park. Teams of three were made up of competitors from different countries. Each team had to visit a set of points in any order, plus 3 controls points which had to be visited by the whole team at the same time. This event had a mass start, which made spectacular viewing and was a fantastic success.
This whole event proved to be a fantastic opportunity to experience International competition and comradeship.
